Event Story

On May 31, in the very month Kyra would have turned 13, the Yuan Ru Art Center in Bellevue filled with paint-covered hands, colorful creations, and smiles that could light up an entire room. The first Kyra's Day of Light had arrived, and with it, a day built entirely around the families who walk the road of childhood cancer.

Nearly 40 members of childhood cancer families came through the doors. For one afternoon, there were no appointments, no waiting rooms, and no weight of treatment to carry. There was only space to breathe, to create, and to be together with people who understand the journey from the inside.

The day was made for joy and connection. Children sat for Courage Portraits that captured their light exactly as it is. They lost themselves in art, moved to live music, and shared food at tables surrounded by community. Every corner of the space had been intentionally designed with these families in mind, so that comfort was never an afterthought.

The children painted without rules or expectations. Each one approached their artwork in their own way. Some carefully chose every color. Others painted boldly, covering the page with whatever their hearts felt. For an afternoon, they were not patients or survivors or diagnoses. They were simply children, free to create, dream, laugh, and shine.

None of this happened alone. Around 30 volunteers gave their time and energy to hold the day together, joined by a generous circle of sponsors, donors, vendors, performers, and community members. Each of them helped turn an idea into a place where families could feel safe, seen, and surrounded by care.

The Day of Light was also a day of remembrance. It was created in Kyra's honor, in the spirit of a girl who believed in finding light on even the darkest days. To gather in her memory, in the month of her birthday, was to keep that light burning and to share it with the families she would have wanted most to surround with love.

What this community created was never transactional. It was joy, connection, comfort, and the kind of memory that families will carry with them long after this single afternoon. To every person who helped make the Day of Light possible, thank you. Your kindness created a ripple that reaches far beyond one day, and it reminded everyone in the room of something Kyra knew well. Light shines brightest when we carry it together.
