Caring for Yourself as a Caregiver
Your health matters too. Why caregiver wellbeing is part of your child's care, and how to protect a little of yourself.
When your child is in treatment, your own needs go to the bottom of the list. But caregiver stress, exhaustion, anxiety, and depression are real and common, and they can last long after treatment ends. Caring for yourself is not selfish. It is part of caring for your child.
Let people help
People want to help and often do not know how. Give them something concrete: a meal, a ride for a sibling, an hour so you can sleep. Accepting help is a skill worth practicing.
Watch your own signals
- Not sleeping or eating, beyond the obvious disruption of hospital life.
- Feeling numb, hopeless, or unable to focus.
- Snapping at people you love, or pulling away from everyone.
If these stick around, tell your care team. Many programs offer mental-health support for parents, and asking for it is a sign of strength.
When did someone last ask how YOU are doing? If the answer is too long ago, this guide is your reminder that you matter here too.
