Questions to Ask Your Care Team

A starter list of questions that help you understand the diagnosis, the plan, and what to expect.

It is hard to think of questions in the moment. Bring a written list to appointments, and do not worry about asking the same thing twice. A good care team expects it.

About the diagnosis

  • What exactly is my child's diagnosis, in plain words?
  • Can you write it down so I can look it up later?
  • How was it found, and what does the stage or risk level mean?

About the plan

  • What is the treatment plan, and how long is it expected to take?
  • What are the main side effects we should watch for?
  • When should I call you, and when should we go to the emergency room?
  • Is a clinical trial an option for us?

About support

  • Who is our social worker, and how do I reach them?
  • What financial and travel help is available through the hospital?
  • Is there a child life specialist who can help my child cope?
