Questions to Ask Your Care Team
A starter list of questions that help you understand the diagnosis, the plan, and what to expect.
It is hard to think of questions in the moment. Bring a written list to appointments, and do not worry about asking the same thing twice. A good care team expects it.
About the diagnosis
- What exactly is my child's diagnosis, in plain words?
- Can you write it down so I can look it up later?
- How was it found, and what does the stage or risk level mean?
About the plan
- What is the treatment plan, and how long is it expected to take?
- What are the main side effects we should watch for?
- When should I call you, and when should we go to the emergency room?
- Is a clinical trial an option for us?
About support
- Who is our social worker, and how do I reach them?
- What financial and travel help is available through the hospital?
- Is there a child life specialist who can help my child cope?
