Supporting Siblings Through Childhood Cancer

Brothers and sisters carry this too. Practical ways to help siblings feel safe, included, and seen.

Siblings of children with cancer are quietly affected from the very start, and their needs are easy to overlook when so much energy goes to the child in treatment. Research recognizes siblings as an at-risk group who deserve support of their own.

What siblings often feel

Worry about their brother or sister, guilt, jealousy of the attention, fear, and loneliness, sometimes all at once. None of it means they are doing badly. It means they are carrying a lot.

What helps

  • Tell them what is happening in age-appropriate, honest words.
  • Keep them connected to their sibling, especially during long hospital stays, with calls, video, drawings, or visits when possible.
  • Protect small pieces of normal life and one-on-one time, even brief.
  • Let them know their feelings are allowed, including the messy ones.
  • Look for sibling-specific camps and programs where they can be around kids who understand.

Several organizations run free camps and events designed specifically for siblings. The resource finder can help you locate them.
